Find quick answers about the uses, common sizes, and key features of utility trailers.
A Utility trailer is a highly versatile, multi-purpose trailer used for transporting nearly any kind of residential, recreational, or light commercial load. Common uses include moving landscaping supplies, furniture, ATVs and side-by-sides, dirt bikes, and general equipment.
Utility trailers are available in a wide array of sizes to fit most towing needs. Common deck dimensions typically range from smaller 5′ x 8′ models suitable for residential use up to larger 7′ x 16′ tandem-axle configurations preferred for commercial landscape and utility work.
A single-axle trailer is generally lighter, less expensive, and easier to maneuver, suited for lighter loads. A tandem-axle trailer offers greater stability, higher payload capacity (GVWR), and the added safety of being able to continue moving if one tire fails.
A standard utility trailer is generally not built or rated to safely haul a passenger vehicle. For transporting cars, a dedicated car hauler or equipment trailer with a specific deck width and much higher weight capacity (GVWR) should always be used.
